When we perceive change as a journey, we cannot predict exactly what will happen nor can we plan everything we will do. The journey will teach us and probably we will find the way to new direction by involving people and reflecting our experiences together. Change is scary and there are many emotions - hopes and fears. When the way to the future is unstable we need something to rely on. What gives us trust to face new and even unknown things? What keeps us together on the way? They can be commonly accepted values, vision or just guiding principles for the change situation. Principles would tell people how they will be treated and how we promise to approach change actions.

When we start the change journey, we might want to establish a set of common principles which give us guidance and a strong base to act. Principles can be aimed for the whole organization or to managers. What are the principles to select or inform about new organization?

  • Change is inevitable - what kind of a Change Journey we want to have?
  • Which are our guiding principles for collaboration, and - are they adequate for the Change Journey?
  • How do we deal with hard and difficult times or conflicts?
  • Which new principles, values and believes do we need to be Masters of Change?

I believe shared values function as an acceleration platform for lasting, real change (i.e., at the personal belief as well as behavioral levels). As this location's name indicates, optimal, sustained gains can be made when personal and organizational values are aligned. The greater the numbers of values aligned, especially at the belief level, the greater opportunities for change and transformation.

After reviewing several values-based frameworks, I advocate the framework of the Hall-Tonna Values Inventory, created by Values Technologies and discussed at length by Chairman Brian P. Hall in his iconoclastic work, Values Shift. This methodology provides a series of tools to gain significant insight into the values priorities of individuals and teams without judgment. Dynamic in nature, it also enables participants to re-create their values priorities for greater personal and organizational alignment and effectiveness. Our EcorityLeader(TM) products are based on this empowering work. For me, personally, it's been nothing less than lifechanging to reclaim a lost value at the Foundational level as a driver for my Vision Values (of/for future goals), especially as a Change Guide.

The other essential element here is then a shared, effective communication framework to discuss, leverage and evolve the shared values and their alignment for the Greater Good (i.e., Change, revenues, people served, etc.); shared values in isolation might be considered something of a non-starter!
